West Virginia University is one of 10 institutions nationwide selected for the grant program, which seeks to educate miners and industry employers about new federal standards, and high-risk activities or hazards the agency identifies. Joshua Brady, director of mining and industrial extension, and Eduardo Sosa, a research associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, received $100,657 to conduct a one-year project that will provide emergency prevention and preparedness training to coal miners and coal mine operators so that they will be able to respond to emergencies involving fire in underground coal mines.

WVU Awarded Grant from the 100K Strong Americas Innovation Fund to Partner with Brazilian Higher Education Institutions

Statler Media Hub: October 11, 2022

Professors Eduardo Sosa and Guilherme Pereira collaboratingWest Virginia University, and partner institutions, were recently announced as a grant-winning team in the 2021 U.S.-Brazil Innovation Fund Grant Competition, sponsored by the 100,000 Strong in Americas Innovation Fund.
Overall, the Innovation Fund will support partnerships between six teams comprised of 18 higher education institutions from the United States and Brazil, as they collaborate on research projects in areas such as artificial intelligence, food and agricultural sciences, big data and climate solutions.

Simulation of impact testing on a protected and unprotected human hand

Futurities (Enginsoft's Magazine) Spring 2022 (pp. 40-43)

Simulation of impact testing on a protected and unprotected human handThis paper presents an overview of the development of a finite element model (FEM) to simulate the impact of a small, low-mass object on the back of a flattened hand protected with a metacarpal glove. The FEM includes the complete bone structure, derived from high-resolution laser scanning of the bones of a human hand, surrounded by soft tissue with material properties representative of a human hand wearing a test case metacarpal glove subjected to low energy impacts. The simulations include impacts to the fingers, knuckles, and metacarpal regions of the hand. Impact reaction forces are calculated and compared to controlled impact tests performed on cadaveric hands reported in the literature. The final objective is to develop a simulation model to assess the level of protection offered by various metacarpal gloves commonly used in different industries.

Hand in Glove: Researchers test safety measures for coal industry

Engineering WV Magazine Spring 2020

WVU President Gordon Gee interviews Eduardo Sosa and team members Faisel Alessa, a Ph.D. student from Saudi Arabia, and Trevor Brison, a mechanical engineering student from Morgantown.

While researchers at West Virginia University were testing coal miners’ safety gloves to help reduce lost-time accidents, they went a step further. Eduardo Sosa, a research associate professor in mechanical and aerospace engineering in the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, and Marta Moure, a post-doctoral fellow from Carlos III University of Madrid, Spain, reduced the need for future physical testing of the gloves through computer simulations.
